Historically, the development of science and technology has been led by heteronormative men (mainly white and from middle- to upper-class backgrounds), and the applications developed have shown significant biases.
Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has fully entered our daily lives and is a current field of research, is not free from this framework and exhibits a gender gap (as well as many others). In this article, we aim to bring this to light by showing where bias occurs and, when possible, why it happens, as well as by explaining several strategies to address the situation.
To do so, we will examine AI from a gender perspective and recall the silenced presence of women in the development of AI. We will analyse the behaviours of AI applications that display biased patterns, in order to raise awareness of these biases and explore ways to correct them. In this way, the aim of this text is to help better understand what AI is and to encourage reflection.
